Dodge College of Film and Media Arts

I am so so happy to announce I’ve been accepted to attend Chapman University for film production. This is something that I have been working towards for a long time now.

I have never been and avid lover of school. It’s not because I’m lazy, it’s not because I’m opposed to learning, but it’s primarily because I’ve had nothing but horrible experiences in the past. By the time I was a senior in high school, I was tired of the slow paced curriculum and wanted to be in college already. So I enrolled into an independent study program and graduated high school 6 months earlier than the rest of my class. I immediately enrolled myself into two different community colleges and started hacking away at classes.

Over a span of 6 years, I’ve dealt with conflicting counselor recommendations, taking classes I didn’t really need, was told to take classes that ended up not being transferable, had my high school and college transcripts go missing in their databases, and so on and so on.

My GPA was pretty low because my hopes in ever obtaining a degree and transferring to Chapman began to outweigh the idea of being accepted. That’s when I took off to Australia.

While there, I gave my shot at applying to Chapman. Although I had my original film stolen and submitted a backup plan, I was still sad to learn that I had not been accepted. Upon returning to the states, I kicked everything into overdrive. Enrolled myself back into classes, which was hard because I no longer had priority registration due to leaving for a semester, got into some of my hardest classes, and got some of the best grades I had ever gotten.

My GPA went up, I practiced my craft, and I re-applied.

Earlier this month, I graduated from Santiago Canyon College with my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, Humanities, and Communication. What does that mean? I don’t really know. Like I said, I’ve never been one for the logistics of our education system. It’s complex, hard to follow, and almost encourages students to drop out due to the enormous hoops you are required to jump through on one foot while juggling.

All I know I wanted was to attend a film school, better my talents, and network with like-minded creative individuals. And now I’ve made it.

It’s been an absolute hell of a journey. But this acceptance into this program is something I have longed for since I decided to finish high school early. Other’s may have an easier process and may not have had to be pushed and challenged for a school’s acceptance, but I appreciate everything I’ve learned and overcome along the way.

Chapman’s not ready for the heat I’m about to bring.
